Third Times The Charm
Well... summer break is over and my third quarter of culinary school starts
tonight. My first quarter I did great, but I didn't have a job and I got sick.
Last quarter I got really sick and just about drove myself crazy working and
going to school. This quarter I have my schedule set up where it wont be quite
so hectic. Last quarter I felt like I was burning my candle at both ends and
come Saturday I wouldn't want to do anything but sleep. My goal this quarter is
to make it thru this quarter... until September 24th... without getting sick.
Tonight from 5:30 - 8:30 I have my Beverage ID & Management class. According to
the class catalog.. "In this lcass the students will learn about Americand
European wines as well as about malted and distilled beverages. In addition to
learning and practicing wine and beverage service skills, students will also
learn how these beverages are produced and bottled, how to identify quality
products, how to pair wines and other beverages with food, and the history
behind fermented and distilled beverages. By the end of the course, students
will have composed and set up a beverage menu and will be able to identify the
properties of a wine. All students will be exposed to liquor laws pertaining to
food service operations as well as management techniques for handling wines and
spirits." Tuesday night from 6:30 - 8:30 I have Computers In The Food Industry.
Hmmm, I wonder if they will let me take the final tomorrow and just not show up
the rest of the quarter? Eh, probably not. It should be an "interesting" class
considering that the Chef I had 1st quarter is teaching it and he's a computer
geek/chef (hmm, where have I seen that combination before?) and this is the
first time they have ever offered this class on campus instead of thru the
Online System. Wednesday night from 6:30 - 9:30 I have Culinary Career
Development and on Thursday from 5:30 - 10:30 I have BAKING! I am also taking
Nutrition as an online course. For the last two quarters I have been in class
until 10:30pm at least three nights a week, this quarter I only have one 10:30
late night, one 9:30 and the rest are 8:30pm. The biggest differences I see this
making are 1) can go home and eat dinner and not spend money thru Wendy's
between 10 and 11pm; 2) can go home and do a load of laundry and the buzzer on
the dryer going off sometime before 1am; 3) classes start later so I only have
to go to work at 7:30am on Mondays and Thursdays; and lastly 4) I can do some
homework when I get home from class and not try to put it all off until
Saturday. Due to recent events, I am hoping that I will appreciate not buring
this candle at both ends and go to bed earlier and be able to stay awake at
work, {yes, the EL is still driving me nuts (and even more so)} and keep up with
my school work so I'm not constantly trying to play catchup. Did you know that
when you burn a candle, you are only supposed to burn it for as many hours as it
is in diameter? And when it is done burning and cool enough to the touch.. you
are supposed to hug it back into shape. Also, if your candle gets bruised and
dull... a good massage with a pair of pantyhose will bring back the shine and
mask the bruises. Hmm... all of a sudden I wish I was a candle.
